Vertical Farming

Introduction

It is vital in agricultural facilities that soil, watering and environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity are regularly monitored and maintained at their optimal levels. Applications include Farms, Vertical Farms and Gardens.

IoTPortal can help achieve more consistent yields and crop quality in a wide range of Agricultural applications. An array of sensors monitor the key parameters in the soil, liquid tanks, and surrounding atmosphere. Monitor the entire farm both locally and remotely, whilst IoTPortal reacts to conditions automatically via the events feature, and notifies you on your smartphone via email, SMS and push notifications should attention be required.

Challenges

Poor Yields

Non-Optimal soil, water and environmental conditions result in plant distress and poor, inconsistent yields.

Inefficient use of staff

Staff need to regularly monitor soil, environmental and water quality. This requires more staff on-site, distracting them from other tasks. Tasks such as monitoring and watering are not carried out at optimal intervals.

Limited distances of sensing networks

Many sensor systems are limited to relatively short cable lengths, preventing coverage of the entire farm

Installation difficulties

Installing sensor networks in farms can be limited by location of power outlets and are difficult to scale up as the farm changes and expands.

Complex to configure and use

Configuring automated sensor systems can be challenging for staff and require a lot of training or ongoing reliance on external contractors.

Limited Sensor Types

Many sensing solutions can only sense and control a very limited range of parameters. This can result in the need to use many different systems to cover the needs of the soil, environment and water parameters.

Solutions

The system shown uses several BRTSys sensors to monitor the critical parameters in the soil and in the environment of the growing area to ensure optimal crop quality and consistency. The IoTPortal Gateway manages the Long-Distance Sensor Bus consisting of up to 80 sensor units and over distances of 200m per bus allowing use in large farms. Additional functions such as weather stations and rain curtain control are also provided.  The entire system can be configured and monitored both locally and remotely via our IoTPortal Smartphone App and Web Application.

The system allows you to monitor parameters such as:

  • Soil moisture levels via the soil moisture sensor
  • Outdoor Weather conditions via the IO Controller-based Weather Station
  • Nutrient Tank monitoring including:
    • Water temperature via the Thermocouple sensor adapter
    • pH level via the pH sensor adapter
    • EC via the Electrical Conductivity sensor adapter
    • Water Level via the IO Controller
  • General environment monitoring
    • CO2 levels via the CO2 sensor
    • Air Quality via the AQS sensor
    • Air temperature, Humidity, Brightness and Motion via the 4in1 sensor

It provides manual or automatic control of devices too such as:

  • Control water pumps and valves for irrigation (2CH Relay actuator)
  • Control lighting (Trailing Edge Light Dimmer)
  • Control Rain Curtains and Sun Shades (2CH Relay actuator)
  • Control Sirens and Warning Lights (2CH Relay actuator) to indicate to staff that attention is required

The Cloud-based system and Smartphone App/Dashboard make it easy to set up and use:

  • View the status of every parameter from around the farm from anywhere in the world via the Smartphone app
  • Use the dashboard on a large monitor from anywhere in the world (via web browser) to view many charts at the same time
  • Set up automatic events to handle tasks around the farm
    • Turn on irrigation pumps via a 2CH Relay actuator when the soil moisture gets below your set threshold
    • Close the rain curtain via the 2CH Relay actuator when the weather station detects rainfall
    • Turn on grow lighting based on ambient light conditions and the current time
    • Operate ventilation fans or shutters when the temperature gets too high or the air quality drops below a set threshold
  • Receive emails, SMS and push notifications when an exception occurs that requires your attention
    • Receive a text message if the nutrient tank level gets low and the system has not been able to restore the level after opening the valve
    • Receive a push notification if the nutrient tank temperature drops to a value where freezing may occur

Advantages

Maintain optimal conditions

The right conditions mean better quality and more consistent yields. The IoTPortal monitors the farm 24/7 to ensure that all key conditions remain within your set limits, reacting automatically via output actuators to take action to maintain the conditions.

Improve staff utilisation

The system reduces the need for manual monitoring and so frees up staff for other tasks. Configure alerts to be notified even whilst off-site or out-of-hours when the system needs attention.

Monitor large farms

Create large networks by daisy chaining the sensors using Quad T-Junctions. Each gateway supports three sensor networks, up to 200m long, allowing a large area to be covered. Use more than one gateway for even larger farms and all gateways appear as one large system.

Simple Installation

The LDSBus uses convenient RJ45 connectors and CAT5e/6 cabling in a simple daisy chained configuration. A single cable provides power and data to all sensors and actuators, avoiding the need for batteries and power outlets around the farm.

Easy to use and intuitive

The smartphone app and dashboard are easy to use for all members of staff. Set up different user permissions allowing users to view only or to re-configure the system.

Range of sensors

We have a wide range of sensors for the soil, environment and aquatic parameters allowing the entire farm to be monitored via one unified system. Mix and match sensors and actuators in any combination. Find out more about our range of sensors and actuators below.
