Introduction

The increased adoption of smart technology and devices brings a huge range of benefits such as convenience and energy efficiency. However, as the number of smart devices grows, significant challenges emerge for homeowners, builders and system integrators. In particular, a lack of interoperability between devices requires multiple controllers each using different protocols and user interfaces, and missed opportunities for automation where devices work together.

PanL Smart Living (PSL) offers an ideal solution, with its ability to connect a diverse range of devices and protocols. These can be controlled through a unified interface for an optimal user experience, via voice control, 10” and 4” touch screen panels and smartphone apps.

Challenges

Intimidating

Using a smart home system can be complex especially where users have different levels of technical knowledge.

Inconvenient

Whilst smart homes are intended to make our lives easier, a lack of control options can actually make everyday tasks more difficult.

Lack of Automation

To get the full potential of a smart home, the system must allow users to do more than control devices manually.

Incompatibility

Not all smart home devices are compatible with each other. Ensuring chosen devices can work together seamlessly is important for a good user experience.

Limited Scalability

Users find it challenging to extend the system as they add new devices and replace older devices.

Challenges

Multiple apps, Scalability issues, and Monitoring Capabilities can make smart home automation seem daunting

Solutions

The illustration shows a smart home system using the PanL Smart Living system. The system provides several comfort and convenience benefits for the guests in the room using the following sensors and actuators.

The 4in1 sensor measures temperature, humidity, ambient light and motion which can be used to define events in response via the output devices

Mood Light Controller provides DALI and DMX outputs which can control LED strip lighting for example

The 2CH Relay + iSENSE is used to control the curtains/blinds in the room

IO Controller can provide a 0-10V output signal to control light dimmers with an analog control signal input

The system can control Philips Hue bulbs via the Hue Bridge.

The system also supports Amazon Alexa and Google Home which provide speech recognition control for the system, for example the user can instruct the PSL to turn on the lights

An IR Blaster is used to control the air conditioning in the living room as well as the television, by emulating their infrared remote controls

Advantages

Easy-to-use

Color touch panels with user-friendly controls ensure that family members and guests can quickly become accustomed to the system.

Multiple ways to control your devices

Multiple local displays within a room ensure that devices can be controlled conveniently. The system shown has 10” PD100 as a main touch controller and smaller 4” PD40 smart displays. Control the system via voice commands and the PSL Smartphone app too.

Manual operation or set up predetermined scenes

The PSL system allows manual control of a wide range of devices such as curtains, lights, mood lights, air conditioning and TV. But for greater convenience, scenes can also be created and selected with just one touch. For example, TV/cinema setting can dim the lights, and close the curtains to create a low light environment.

Integrated and Unified

One system controls all of the features in the house. Avoid the need for many different remote controls or control panels or apps for the TV, blinds, curtains, air conditioning and lighting. Turn off all of the lights in the house as you leave the door and return them to the preferred brightness and color with one touch when you re-enter the home. Different parts of the system can also work together (for example, have the lights come on when the 4in1 sensor detects your presence).

Modular

Extend the system easily in future with other devices. Add a BRT Systems 2CH Relay actuator to control garden lighting or additional smart lights. Or add 3rd party devices with PSL’s support for a wide range of devices.
